6 Hair Trends We Saw (and LOVED) at New York Fashion Week

Best Spring Hair Trends from NY Fashion Week

New York Fashion Week is technically about the clothes, but looking beyond the designer’s fashions and haute couture, you can also get a sneak peek of upcoming beauty trends, which is just what we did with this past fashion week. Again with the technicalities, but it was New York Fashion Week Fall/Winter 2020, but we see no reason not to sport these trends sooner. Spring/summer braids, anyone? Here are our top 6 favorite hair trends we spotted on the runways…

Strong Braids

We love anything that blends together strength and femininity, and that’s just how Jason Wu styled his models’ hair, with thick slicked back plaits that looked at once clean, proper, and edgy.

Strong, Geometric Shapes

From strong braids to strong shapes, we love where fashion is taking us. The look on the runway at Christopher John Rogers’ show was both fanciful and fierce, with hair that had been sculpted into either bold voluminous afros or exaggerated Hollywood curls.

Bold Dash of Color

Of course, it wasn’t all just about the shape of the hair. Color came out to play, too, with Harlequin hues at the Christian Siriano show. Here, sleek, long ponytails were adorned with blue and pink extensions, giving fresh life to a classic look, and an easy, no-commitment way to go bright.

Dramatically Low Ponies

Speaking of ponytails, we saw a lot of low ponies on the runway, with the most dramatic at Carolina Herrera. Here, the look was minimalistic with a severe middle part and fastened so low as to cover the ears. Close second on low ponies seen on the runway at Oscar de la Renta, though there they did not cover the ear.

Bold Blossoms

There’s nothing we love more than flowers in our hair, so we were happy to see that Tom Ford took it one step further on his runway with clean, contoured, slicked back hair and modern, metallic flowers. And those earrings! Gorg. Eous.

Bold Bling

Of course, what’s a runway show without some bling? Alice + Olivia brought it, with hair embellishments sprinkled atop both loose waves and along the partlines of slicked back ponies. Rhinestones and pearls were delicately placed using tweezers and glue. Perhaps this isn’t a weekday work look, but going out? We say yes.

From bold jewels to strong statement shapes, the overriding theme we saw was one of confidence, which is one timeless look we will always get behind. Don’t know about you, but we’re not waiting until fall to try some of these trends. Which look will you be trying? Let us know in the comments...
